KD-1A ADV-Kick - Midwest Analog Products The ADV-Kick was designed by Thomas Henry from Midwest Analog Products. The circuit is taken directly from different pieces of the "Electronic Drum Cookbook". This is the first module I bought from MAP, and I'm fairly pleased with the sound. It has a 566 VCO chip for generating the wave forms, a simple decay-only envelope generator that can be routed to amplitude and/or pitch and a 3080 based VCA. There's also a comparator on the gate input which allows you to trigger it from almost anything. When I originally built the ADV-Kick, I made basically no modifications to the design. The only addition I made was to add a 1M resistor to ground at the gate input. There is a cap on the input that's used to shorten the gate to a trigger pulse. This cap can sometimes hold a charge, causing the module to miss a beat. Adding the 1M resistor helps discharge the cap, making the drum trigger more reliably
Now that I've owned the ADV-Kick for some time, There are a few things that I'd like to add. First and foremost, this
thing really needs a pitch CV input. It would also be more flexible if there were seperate EGs for pitch sweep and amplitude
decay. Finally, I think this thing could use a lowpass filter with some resonance. At some point I will re-rack this
module and add a daughterboard with these changes.
DP-1A 4 voice digital percussion module - Modified toy
This module has been retired. It is currently being mounted in a new enclosure to become part of a circuit bent
noise synth. More information will be added to the site as the design progresses.
Analog Drum Clone: Make sure you check out the Analog Drum Clone project that I'm working on for more percussion modules. The Drum Clone is semi-modular with gates and audio routed internally. Since it is pre-patched I decided to give it it's own pages, rather than lump it together with my modular synth. |
